Advocacy Services

Sexual assault and relationship violence are traumatic experiences. Often one does not know where to turn for help. The SRVC provides confidential advocacy services to help students understand their options and resources. The individual’s choices of which available options and resources to use are always respected.

Victim advocacy is provided by nationally certified staff advocates and trained after hours volunteer staff and faculty. Victim advocates provide support and inform of victims’ rights, options, and resources. A victim advocate often acts as a liaison between the victim/survivor and others (e.g., campus departments, law enforcement, criminal justice system, etc.). They may also provide support and accompany students when reporting to the police department and when having a forensic exam.

Support services are available through free counseling and support group, during the fall and spring semesters. Students may meet individually with a certified counselor for free counseling sessions. Students may also take part with the Survivors Group, a peer-based support group facilitated by a certified victim advocate. All counseling and support group participation is confidential.

Education Services

The SRVC conducts various education programs throughout the academic year. SRVC staff and peer educators are available for education presentations on various topics that can be tailored to the participants needs. The staff teach academic one-hour credit elective courses focused on various relevant topics. Professional trainings and consultation services primarily for the campus community are available throughout the year.

RESPECT Program

RESPECT (Rape Education Services by Peers Encouraging Conscious Thought) is a signature peer education internship program of the SRVC. RESPECT peer educators are undergraduate students who encourage other college students to consciously think about what they can do to address sexual and relationship violence and be part of changing our culture.

Using the peer education model, RESPECT peer educators provide education programs on campus and occasionally within the community through interactive presentations, awareness campaigns, and outreach events. RESPECT peer educators are trained with the latest information about sexual violence, prevention, risk reduction, bystander intervention, and resources. These presentations are very popular with our “While the Professor is Away” program in which we ask to please not cancel class but invite RESPECT to come talk with your class.

Recruitment for RESPECT peer educators occurs annually, mid-spring semester for the next academic year. Follow RESPECT on social media or visit its website to apply during the recruitment period.
